Richford Riverside Conservation Area & Public Access

DSCN5837.JPG

Exploring our Wild and Scenic rivers requires access to the rivers themselves. This grant, awarded to the Vermont River Conservancy (VRC) in 2017, secured a conservation easement along the Missisquoi River in Richford, protecting river access for paddlers, anglers, and the public.

Details

The VRC secured a conservation easement from a private landowner. It allowed the Northern Forest Canoe Trail to relocate a portage trail to a permanently protected corridor, while laying the ground work to create a new community gathering space along the river. Our River Community Grant Funds were used to purchase the easement and for legal expenses associated with its drafting.

The Easement:

  • Permanently protects river access for use by paddlers, anglers, and the public

  • Grants the right to establish a portage trail

  • Creates a spur trail connecting the Missisquoi Valley Rail Trail to the river

  • Limits bank alteration

  • Prevents development of the river’s floodplain, providing a place where the river can always flood and move, helping to protect downstream roads and structures

  • Establishes a riparian buffer, protecting water quality and wildlife habitat

  • Protects the scenic vista from the new Richford Overlook Park

  • Allows for the establishment of a primitive campsite for paddlers and cyclists

In addition to securing the easement, work involved relocating signage for paddlers and clearing an access trail to the river. Further work is planned to create a more permanent access ramp, fishing platform and campsite amenities. Future paddlers, bikers, the general public, and the river will benefit from this project for years to come.
